The school was founded as the Preparatory High School for Colored Youth in 1870, the first of its kind in the United States. The new 280,000-square-foot building is the third incarnation of Dunbar High School on this site. The design for the new Washington D.C.-based Dunbar High School is based on its predecessor, a 1917 building that served the school before its demolition in the 1970s.
